Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Synopsis JulieH was going to do a presentation on Carl Jung tonight, but changed her mind because of some of what she found out in her preparatory research. So Pierre does a talk primarily focused on Jung's book, “Psychology and Alchemy”. [Note: Pierre mentioned to us the next day (12/29) that he was not satisfied with his treatment of the issues in this talk, and so wants to do another talk on Jung next Friday Jan 4.] We had 3 talks near each other regarding Jung: Part one could be...

Four of us explore our dreams with Pierre as midwife. Dream Texts JeffS's dream 4/27/2018 ----- Scene 1 ----- 1 I'm on a football field, in practice. This is my first year there. I'm in the first days in this new school. I guess it's college -- Dartmouth or something. 2 There's this bigger Black guy (another team mate) who hits me from behind, for no reason. I turn around and try to tackle him too, but it doesn't have much effect. I can tell this guy just hates me, and I don't know why. And...

My apologies: The first 14 minutes or so are blank video because I arrived late to film. Thanks to Regina for supplying audio from her own recorder for this section. Thanks also to Adina B for the following contributed notes. -------------------- Certainly Prometheus brings dreams and the understanding of the arts. Why does the myth of Prometheus include Epimetheus ? Prometheus is providential and Epimetheus is “hindsight” or “after thinker” Prometheus knows that there is a box...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session of study. Lately we've been taking a break from the Parmenides, going through Proclus' Theology of Plato (*) instead, in order to see how Proclus lays out the 14 orders of gods implied in the Parmenides. Today we don't do any reading: Instead, Pierre leads us through a dialogue he has prepared on the 12 mundane gods, which he says we already do in our own life and activities/states-of-mind. These come in...

Synopsis Pierre Grimes, PhD leads the Noetic Society through another brilliant weekend seminar increasing our understanding. This time Pierre helps us re-consider the training of the philosopher-king from the perspective of the One-Self ('emptiness', 'non-atman', etc.) vs Divine Luminosity ('bliss', 'Mind', etc.), via references from books 6 and 7 of Plato's "Republic", as translated by our own Juan and Maria Balboa , and via the hypotheses laid out in the Balboa translation of...

Synopsis Another fun Saturday morning with Pierre. We warmed up with a little politics, and a discussion of how to break people (especially Trump-ites, but also entire societies) out of their heavy “belief” states. Then we dive into two dream explorations with JulieH and Eldar. (I was exhausted, so again, just an audio and some snapshots today, no video.) JulieH's dream exploration starts at about 0:34:15 (where I deleted about 10 minutes of silence while Pierre and the group read over her...
